Charlie almost responds, and then doesn't, continuing to cut him off. Nick later messages Charlie asking him to talk. The pair silently bury the hatchet with more understanding for each other.
Nick admits that was partially his fault because he wasn't ready to come out, and while Tao is sympathetic to this, also reminds him that Charlie being the "boy he kisses in secret" is always going to make him feel rubbish. Nick reassures Tao that Charlie loves him, and Tao admits his worries about Charlie hanging out with people who bullied him, and his anger at not knowing about his best friend's new relationship. When Nick goes to their usual bench for lunch, he instead runs into Tao, who isn't exactly thrilled to see him.īut it turns out to be a blessing in disguise for both of them, allowing the two key people in Nick's life to talk about things openly. With the big event – that joins the girls and boys' schools together – days away, Charlie quits the rugby team and withdraws from his friends completely. The pent-up aggression Tao has ultimately results in him getting into a fight with Harry at school.Īfter finding out about both Tao and Nick's fights, Charlie blames himself for everything and in an emotional moment with his sister, admits he feels he's ruining everyone's lives. Protective Tao has become used to seeing Charlie be the butt of the jokes at school, particularly with Harry Green. This later gives way to him feeling hurt he was the last one to find out about the relationship. With Nick still not out and figuring out his sexuality, this ultimately causes friction within Charlie's own friendship group, particularly film-loving, introspective Tao, who feels Charlie is replacing him with popular extrovert Nick. It ultimately results in Nick getting in a fight at the cinema as he defends his boyfriend, with the gang unaware they're now a couple. This inadvertently brings out the best and worst of those around them, who are either kept in the dark about their relationship, or get jealous of how close they're getting.įor Nick's rugby mates, it brings out their homophobic side, with entitled snob Harry Green in particular using any excuse he can to make a dig at Charlie when they're in social situations together. Charlie in comparison is an introverted drummer in the school band, who is happy to spend his days with his two best friends, Tao and Elle.Īfter being paired next to each other in their form room, Charlie and Nick quickly become good friends, and over time this develops into something more. Let's recap – Nick is the cool kid at school, and lead star of the rugby team. It also sets up some potential problems that Nick and Charlie will now have to overcome if they are to survive as a couple in season two.

With Nick discovering his sexuality and deciding how to approach his ever-growing feelings for Charlie, who is already out as gay, season one was never going to be the easiest road for them.īut the end of season one provided a happy ending for the pair, at least for now, as they figure out what's to come. Nick and Charlie have officially become one of our favourite couples ever, with Heartstopperleaving us blubbering wrecks in the middle of the office.
